The community that I have chosen to research (as of this moment) will be those that love to play with/do makeup and are passionate about it (makeup artist, beauty artist, aesthetician, even sales associate…).
I want to meet with and gain insight into some areas of the field that I do not have as much familiarity with, such as those whom work in theater, perhaps a plastic surgeons office (they sell heavy duty stuff), and maybe even someone who runs the cosmetics counter at a drug store..there’s obviously a reason they’re there versus running a register at a gas station.
To sit as a client and report my experience, as well as to interview artists who have had formal education as well as non whatsoever are my definite goals starting out. I think that these will relay a broad range of messages about the subject to a potential reader.
The hope for my project will be gain a well rounded understanding of the subject in all of it’s attainable aspects that I can find in Lexington, and hopefully this will open my mind to other possible opportunities for working in these fields.
Cool, sounds like you will have at least 20 hours of fieldwork over the semester. Something you might consider are “high end” and “low end” cosmetologists. It might also be interesting to consider some of the gender stereotypes, for example, what men and women become make-up artists, or what men/women wear make-up.
